Joseph's first occupation was as a scool teacher, then as a Gun Barrel grinder. Joseph Edge Married Sarah Meriah Hingley and they ran the Rose and Crown public house and brewery opposite the entrance to Haden Hill Park, Old Hill allthough I believe it was Sarah's family's pub and that she was the original licencee. A copy of a photograph displayed in Joseph's scrap book was first printed in the Black Country Bugle Annual and it shows the name of Edge on the pub sign above the door.
*...In a lot of EDGE trees it shows Joseph as being married to a Sarah Merick. I believe this to be a mistaken identity for the hand written census of Sarah Meriah being misread as..........Merick. For my mother recalled Joseph's wife's name being Hingley.

Stanley Howard Edge (1903 - 1989) was the designer if the Austin 7 motor car. Stanley Edge was born on the 5th of August, 1903. He left school at the age of 14 and entered the drawing office of the Austin Motor Company. He made an extensive study of cars and engines and was a natural draftsman. Herbert Austin admired his work and in 1922 employed Stanley to draw detailed plans for his new project - the Austin Seven. Edge designed the motor and transmission and worked with Herbert Austin on the other parts of the overall Seven design. Stanley Edge lived with Herbert Austin during this time and full size drawings were reportedly made and studied on Austin's billiard table. Drawings were finalized in 1922 and the 6 prototypes soon followed. Edge returned to the Longbridge drawing office in 1922 with the aim of reducing production costs. He was involved in the design and production of racing Seven's and became well known to Arthur Waite, Austin's son in law who became famous for his racing efforts. In December 1925, Edge left Austin Motor Company and joined a firm of agricultural engineers. He worked on numerous engineering projects before returning to Austin the following year. Stanley Edge passed away 2 weeks before his 87th birthday.
19. ROLAND BARNSLEY6 EDGE (JOSEPH5, RUEBEN4, JOSEPH3, JOSEPH2, THOMAS1) was born June 10, 1881 in 110 Halesowen Road,Dudley, and died from hypertension and senility (stroke) on June 6, 1952 in Burton Road Hospital, Sedgley.. He married FANNY MINNIE WOODMAN May 1, 1903 in Dudley registry office, daughter of ARTHUR WOODMAN and RUTH SMITH). She was born April 30, 1884, and died 1961 in Burton Road Hospital,Dudley.
In 1903 Rowland's occupation was recorded on his marriage certificate as a master brewer but later in life in 1946, he worked at Palethorpes, sausage and pie manufacturers in Tipton as a Butchers journeyman. At the time he kept a large allotment at the end of Binfield Street where he grew vast amounts of 'Coseley Fan' leeks, all of which were sold to Palethorpes which they put in their black puddings.
He was an accomplished musician and played the organ at the Hippadrome Theatre in Dudley.
Marriage noted for ROWLAND BARNSLEY EDGE and MINNIE WOODMAN:
It is interesting to note that on her birth certificate she was registered as Fanny Minnie Woodman whereas on her marriage certificate her name is recorded as Minnie May Woodman. My mother (Joan Phyllis Edge) recalled that she changed her name officially herself.
The wedding was witnessed by J.Newton, Emily Newton, F. Beckley and Lance Cpl H.Woodman.
The marriage certificate shows their address at the time as Cokeland Place,Cradley Heath but my mother says that this address was only put down to enable the wedding to take place in the Dudley district
At the time of the wedding both fathers were recorded as deceased.

Notes for P RUDENCE EDGE:
The Thompson family home was at 216 Halesowen Road, Old Hill. The back of an Ironmongers shop which was owned and opperated by Prue. This was later closed and became a branch of a drycleaners. Wilf and Prue moved next door to No 214 which they also owned along with No 212.
Prue's husband was a coal miner who layed down the shot charges. One charge went off in his face and he never worked again but lived on to die of old age
Prue was the person that the family always turned to for advice which was always sound.

Notes for J OSEPH FREDERICK EDGE:
Left school and joined the army ( The Loyal Regiment) as a band boy at the age of thirteen in 1926 (lied about his age as you had to be fourteen) was sent to the Knellor Millitary school of music to study.
Was captured by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore and spent the rest of the war as a POW at Chosin,Keijo and Changi jail prison camps.
His music career covered many aspects from being a concert pianist by age 10yrs,a member of many local dance bands around the Black Country through the big band era playing regularly at Dudley Town Hall and The Robin Hood, and association with many local brass bands to include The Revo Works Band Tipton, John Thompsons(boilermakers) Works band,Winfields of Walsal Band and finally finishing up at The Langley Prize Silver Band. He also played in the orchestra at a lot of the local amature dramatical productions.
His first 'brass-band' was a result of his first job at Horseley Bridge and Thomas Piggott Ltd were a fellow worker, Mr.Joe Reed introduced him to the Salvation Army in Tipton along with his brother Tom.
He worked until retirement (and after recieving his gold watch from) at The Vono from 1947 -1978 , where he worked as a machinist in M department making springs.
Joseph died of a stroke in 1984 and was cremated at Newton Road, West Bromwich.
